The Design

The sound of Macbeth was a dark and suspenseful atmosphere that followed the idea of “melancholy beauty” that was a central concept amongst the designers during our working sessions. I used dissonance to create an uneasy feeling that grew throughout the show, following Macbeth’s descent into madness. I created a whisper effect that became more chaotic as the show progressed. I held a recording session with the three witches and had them read a jumbled version of their lines. I then edited the recordings to create a cacophony of the witches whispers. Director Kaitlin Henderson had the designers focus on the cyclical nature of the show. I included a speeding up clock with the last whisper cue to convey the witches’ torment repeating again.
